Retraining on a 5-seater towing aircraft with variable pitch propeller incl. tail wheel instruction.
Expenditure approx. 6-8 hours
Glacier flying is certainly one of the most fascinating disciplines in aviation. Our Piper PA18 «SuperCub» is particularly suitable for this challenging training.
Tailwheel instruction can be integrated into the training. The effort involved in this training depends very much on the pilot's level of training.

Our ultra-modern and comfortable Cessna 172 JT-A are certified for flights under instrument flight rules. They are equipped with the G1000 glass cockpit, which is an ideal platform for instrument flights. The instrument rating is a must for commercial flying, but also offers private pilots advantages such as less dependence on the weather, simpler planning, especially for international flights, thanks to standardized procedures, and much better support from air traffic control.
Although Speck airfield, LSZK, does not offer IFR approach and departure procedures, it rarely has fog and a strong southerly foehn influence, so that VMC conditions often prevail at Speck when Zurich still has IMC. No slots mean more flexible flight planning and training. The customs procedure enables training flights to nearby countries, e.g. Friedrichshafen.
To be able to start practical IR training, you must have at least 50 hours of PIC in your logbook. It is advisable to acquire the night flight rating (NVFR) beforehand. For private instrument flights, a class 2 medical is sufficient, which has been extended to include the audiogram (hearing test, «IR Checked» entry in the medical). Medical renewal frequencies remain the same.
The theory course lasts around 200 hours. You will learn the relevant subjects for instrument flying. The practical training comprises 50 hours, of which 30 hours can be completed on a certified simulator.
For non-binding information on IR training, please contact our office.
The Basic Instrument Rating (BIR) according to EASA FCL.835 is a flexible and competence-based training course for private pilots who wish to conduct IFR flights. The course consists of theoretical and practical modules, which must be completed at an approved training organization (ATO). The practical training can be completed at the FGZO. For the theory, SafetyWings offers flexible distance learning courses in combination with in-depth lessons in small groups in Sursee and Altenrhein.
Theoretical training
The theory comprises three modules with the following subjects:
BIR Module 1
BIR Module 2
BIR Module 3
Each module is examined individually or jointly by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA).
Practical training
Flight training is divided into four modules:
Requirements and validity
The BIR course offers a flexible and practical opportunity for private pilots to expand their skills in instrument flying and to fly safely under IFR conditions.

Structure and cost overview for instrument flight training on SEP Cessna 172 JT-A G1000
The Competency Based IR (CBIR) is a simplified instrument flight license for private use (with PPL/CPL license, but not for ATPL) and can be completed with the Cessna 172 of the FGZO. This module includes basic instrument training as well as in-depth instrument flying with the actual procedure training. Part of the training can be carried out on a certified FNTP II simulator.

Would you like to improve your flying skills and broaden your horizons? The MEP/L (Multi Engine Piston Land) class rating allows you to fly twin-engine aircraft and can be acquired cost-effectively at Speck airfield with a Tecnam P2006T aircraft. The aircraft is equipped with two Rotax 912S engines powered by MOGAS. Furthermore, the cockpit is equipped with a Garmin G950 which allows operation under IFR conditions. Have we aroused your interest? Please contact the flight school office or our MEP/L instructor Ruedi Huber on 079 620 12 37.
