Overview

Conditions

  • Minimum age 17 years (for the practical test)
  • Maximum age depends on the result of the aero-medical examination
  • Medical Class II

1. The training objective

The aim of the training is to obtain a private pilot's license (PPL). This license entitles you to fly independently at home and abroad. If you have ambitions to continue your training to become a professional pilot, we will provide you with ideal support. Please mention this on your application for practical training.

The culmination of the training is the so-called skill test, a flight with a Bazl expert. You will then receive your private pilot's license with the SEP (Single Engine Piston) rating. The PPL license is valid for life. The SEP rating is valid for 2 years. To renew it, you must have flown at least 12 hours, including a one-hour flight with a flight instructor, within the 12 months prior to expiry.

The medical (medical certificate) must be valid and is mandatory before the first solo flight.

2. Your flight instructor

The FGZO's approximately 30 flight instructors all work part-time. Most of them work full-time in professional aviation, as pilots for airlines, in the military or as air traffic controllers.

Based on your registration for the practical training, you will be assigned a flight instructor who meets your time and personal requirements. He or she will plan your training with you and select the ideal basic training aircraft for you. They will train you to become a conscientious, safe and disciplined pilot. If you want to make flying more than just a hobby, we will assign you a flight instructor who will accompany you in an advisory and training capacity until you obtain your commercial pilot and instrument rating.

3 The theoretical training

The theory training is best completed in our theory course. We run this course as a «continuous theory course», so you can join in at any time. The BAZL theory exams take place every month at various locations in Switzerland.

4. The practical training

The duration of the practical training depends primarily on your wishes and your availability. As the shortest possible training period, 6-7 weeks is not unrealistic, provided the weather cooperates and you can devote yourself exclusively to flying. At the other extreme, the training can extend over three seasons. Ideally, and in practice most often, the practical training lasts one to two years.

5. The practical examination

The flight test is conducted by an expert from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation. The examination venue is the home airfield you are familiar with at the time. To be admitted to the test, you must have completed at least 45 block hours.

6. The training costs

The entire training course for obtaining a private pilot's license (PPL) costs about:

45 flight hours (pure flight time) at 205.- 9'225.00
5-hour simulator package 180.00
Flight instructor fee (instruction time), approx. 90 h à 85.- 7'650.00
Training folder «Practical training for obtaining a PPL» 49.00
Theory course FGZO 990.00
Voice course FGZO 880.00
Theory material 800.00
Aeronautical Information Publication, VFR Manual 152.00
BAZL examination fees ca. 500.00
Landing taxes Speck 0.00
Total excl. VAT. ca. 20'426.00

This cost breakdown is based on training on the C152 basic training aircraft. If the training takes place on Tecnam P2008JC, the costs are reduced by approx. CHF 700.-.

For a restricted private pilot's license (LAPL), the costs are reduced by approx. CHF 3'500.-.

7. Our aircraft fleet

The following 6 aircraft are available for basic training and are equipped with a modern glass cockpit:

We can offer the following aircraft for your further training:

The four Cessna 172 JT-As are equipped and certified for instrument flight. All other FGZO aircraft are certified for visual flight. Night flying is possible with C-172 JT-A, C-152 and MX-7-235.

Within the SwissPSA (Swiss Pilot School Association), CPL (commercial pilot) and IR (instrument flight) courses are offered on a regular basis.

8. Insurances

All FGZO motorized aircraft are insured as follows:

These insurances are included in the aircraft rental price.

*: Passenger accident insurance only applies if the pilot is resident in Switzerland.

Before commencing flight training, you must provide security deposit of 2000 CHF for any financial obligations to the FGZO. No interest is paid on the deposit. This amount will be refunded when you leave the FGZO.

9. Invoicing and terms of payment

Invoices are issued on a monthly or fortnightly basis. Invoices are payable net within the payment period.
